The city located in southern Poland in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship hides a renowned Polish market, known as Nowa Targowica = New Market.
At this place, you can enjoy an extraordinary fair every week, which continues its good historical reputation.
Thanks to its advantageous location, Nowy Targ was historically a significant trading center. In 1487, the city gained the right to hold two annual festivals and a weekly market, which were very popular among local residents as well as people from other regions.
The weekly market under the open sky still takes place today, in a modern form right in the aforementioned New Market. Less than 85 kilometers south of Krakow, you will find everything you can think of.
The markets in Nowy Targ ensure you have fun. A good mood prevails here, and like at every fair, there is room for bargaining prices.
The Nowy Targ market is divided into small thematic squares. You will find a blacksmith's square, an artists' square, as well as a textile square.
Lovers of local dairy products, fruits, vegetables, sweet and savory treats will find something for themselves. In addition to food, the market offers a variety of clothing, accessories, seasonal products, parts, as well as garden and household supplies. But that's not all. Visitors can also find an agricultural section, where poultry can be purchased, as well as pets like dogs or cats.
The markets were historically a significant source of income for the city. Many traders and buyers concentrated here daily, which naturally contributed to the development of the local economy.
The legendary market is open three days a week, on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday from 7:00 AM - 2:00 PM (with exceptions for Polish public holidays). On Wednesdays, you can visit the Jablonka markets, located about 15 km from Nowy Targ. Don’t speak Polish? You don’t have to worry about communicating with the locals.
Vendors are very accommodating, and most of them can communicate in Slovak. There are even free parking spaces available for visitors, and you can easily pay in euros at the stalls.
Nowy Targ is not just a destination for shopping enthusiasts, but also for those who love traveling. The city’s location near the Gorce Mountains makes it a tourist attraction during both winter and summer seasons, when the number of visitors significantly increases.
In the Nowy Targ district, you can explore nature reserves, Gorce National Park, and rare churches. If you want to enjoy the city in all its beauty, head to the vast Market Square (Rynek Nowy Targ) with its heritage-protected houses.
The large area of the square has provided a good predisposition for organizing various markets. Twice a week, you can enjoy the Nowy Targ Fair (known as Jarmark Nowotarski), and once a year, the city hosts the Podhale Fair, where you can enjoy the famous oscypek - smoked cheese made from sheep's milk and products made from sheep wool.
Nowy Targ is a place that connects with its historical legacy and will captivate you with its trading spirit. Whether you decide to visit the market or go hiking with friends, make sure to test the local cuisine along the way.
