Central Slovakia: The Most Beautiful Places for Trips

1. Orava

This unique region on the Slovak-Polish border ranks among Slovakia's most beautiful. Picturesque landscapes, the Roháče and the Orava Beskids offer plenty of hiking opportunities. The ascent to Babia hora or Ostrý Roháč is rewarding. A less demanding walk combined with exploring the past awaits you in the open-air museum located in Zuberec.

Museum of Orava Village

Among the historical gems is Orava Castle. It's one of the most photographed places in Slovakia and a top tourist attraction. In the past, it attracted world filmmakers who shot the film Nosferatu here.

Also worth visiting is Rio de Klin. The village of Klin earned this nickname thanks to the statue of Christ on the hill above the village, offering stunning views of the Orava Reservoir and the Tatra panorama.

2. Terchová and Surroundings

Terchová is famous for the Slovak outlaw Juraj Jánošík. This picturesque village under the peaks of the Malá Fatra enchants with the statue of Jánošík, an observation tower, and a traditional folk festival called Jánošík Days. These attractions make it a frequent tourist destination.

Central Slovakia

The Terchová area offers year-round recreation. In winter, it draws visitors for skiing in the nearby Vrátna Valley, while in summer it invites for hiking. Don't miss the gorges known as Jánošík's holes or the ascent to Malý and Veľký Rozsutec. Terchová and its surroundings are a must-visit.

3. Banská Štiavnica

A central Slovak treasure on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The famous mining town breathes history at every step, not just when visiting the Old and New Castle. An iconic monument is also the Štiavnica Calvary, among the most beautiful in Europe. Today, tourists are also drawn to the famous love bank, which tells the story of writer Andrej Sládkovič and Marína.

Banská Štiavnica

The city's surroundings feature mining tunnels. When visiting Štiavnica, explore the underground tunnels. The Bartolomej tunnel offers the most extensive mining exhibition. The area also boasts well-known ponds perfect for a pleasant walk in the Štiavnica Hills.

4. Central Slovakia and Its Underground

The underground of this region offers not only mines but also natural beauty. Discover the unique system of Demänovská caves, where Demänovská Cave and Demänovská Cave of Freedom are accessible. In the Nízke Tatras, you'll also find the Važecká and year-round accessible Stanišovská Cave.

Chopok

Near mining towns, you'll find the Harmanecká Cave, where partisans hid during World War II. The Bystrianska Cave boasts rich decorations, and in some places, aragonite appears. The area around this cave offers rich opportunities for winter and summer recreation in the resorts of Tále, Mýto pod Ďumbierom, or the southern slopes of Chopok.

5. Vlkolínec

The village beneath the peaks of the Veľká Fatra is a UNESCO-listed treasure. The folk architecture reservation offers a glimpse into the lives of our ancestors. You can see traditional wooden houses, crafts, and customs that were once integral to their lives.

Nearby, you'll find the resort Malinô Brdo, which offers cyclists a route to the town of Ružomberok. A glimpse into the past and traditional Slovak architecture can also be found in the open-air museum in Martin.

6. Kremnica

The royal town of Kremnica is a gem you shouldn't miss in central Slovakia. The Kremnica Mint is our oldest enterprise, operating continuously for over 700 years. Florins, ducats, Slovak crowns, and today euros were minted here. Learn more about currency history in the Museum of Coins and Medals. Stroll through the historic center and climb the church tower for beautiful views of the town and surroundings.

Central Slovakia - Kremnica

Besides these cultural treasures, you'll find another unique feature near Kremnica. Not far from the mining town, in the village of Kremnické Bane lies the alleged center of Europe. Near the Church of St. John, a stone with a plaque marks this unique spot.

7. The Leaning Tower in Banská Bystrica

Banská Bystrica serves as a central hub of this region. It is linked to the mining history and our history. Important historical events are covered in the SNP Museum. While walking through the historic center, you'll encounter a rarity: the Clock Tower from 1552 leans slightly, earning it the nickname the leaning tower.

Banská Bystrica

The town's historical landmark is the Barbakan Castle. The castle includes a church with one of the altars by Master Paul of Levoča. A nature trail leads you under the trees to the top of Urpín Hill.

8. Pribylina and the Enchanting Liptov

The Museum of the Liptov Village, located in Pribylina, is a popular tourist destination. The Pribylina open-air museum takes you back in time, immersing you in the history of our ancestors.
