Nowa Targowica in Nowy Targ

Located in southern Poland's Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Nowy Targ hosts the well-known Polish market, Nowa Targowica = New Market.

Enjoy a unique fair every week that maintains its storied reputation.

Historically, Nowy Targ was a key trading center. In 1487, it received rights to hold two annual festivals and a weekly market, attracting locals and visitors from afar.

The weekly market still thrives today, in a modern form at the New Market. Just 85 kilometers south of Krakow, you'll find almost anything you need.

A Place Where You Can Find the Impossible

The Nowy Targ markets promise a lively experience. The atmosphere is upbeat, and like any fair, there's room for haggling.

The market is divided into themed areas, including a blacksmith's square, an artists' square, and a textile square.

Fans of local dairy, fruits, vegetables, and snacks will find plenty to enjoy. Besides food, the market offers clothing, accessories, seasonal products, parts, and garden and household supplies. There's also an agricultural section where you can buy poultry and pets like dogs or cats.

Historically, the markets were a major income source for the city, with traders and buyers gathering daily, boosting the local economy.

Nowy Targ Markets - Opening Hours

The market is open three days a week: Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday from 7:00 AM - 2:00 PM (except on Polish public holidays). On Wednesdays, visit the Jablonka markets, about 15 km from Nowy Targ. Language barriers aren't a problem, as most vendors speak Slovak.

Visitors will find free parking spaces and can pay in euros at the stalls.

What Else Does Nowy Targ Offer?

Nowy Targ isn't just for shoppers; it's also a destination for travelers. Its location by the Gorce Mountains attracts tourists year-round, with visitor numbers peaking in winter and summer.

Explore nature reserves, Gorce National Park, and historic churches in the Nowy Targ district. To see the city in full, visit the large Market Square (Rynek Nowy Targ) with its heritage-protected houses.

The square's size makes it ideal for hosting markets. Twice a week, enjoy the Nowy Targ Fair (Jarmark Nowotarski), and once a year, the city hosts the Podhale Fair, featuring oscypek—smoked sheep's cheese—and wool products.

Conclusion

Nowy Targ blends historical charm with a lively market atmosphere. Whether you're visiting the market or hiking with friends, be sure to sample the local cuisine.
