Cancelled Flights During International Conflicts: Know Your Rights

What Does Standard Travel Insurance Cover?

Travel insurance often isn't associated with catastrophic events. We usually anticipate enjoyable trips, pushing negative thoughts aside. But have you considered what "peace of mind" really means?

Basic insurance typically covers three areas: medical expenses, injuries and acute health issues, and repatriation.

However, transport to Slovakia in insurance terms refers to the transport of a sick or injured insured person, not a return home if a flight is cancelled. Its main purpose is to protect your health and cover potentially high costs abroad.

If you believed travel insurance automatically covers a cancelled return flight or missed vacation, that's a common misconception among travelers.

Cancellation Isn't Automatically Covered by Insurance

Cancellation insurance protects your investment if you must cancel your vacation for a serious reason. This includes sudden illness, injury, hospitalization, or significant family events. Simply notifying the insurer isn't enough—you must provide proof for the cancellation.

If illness forces you to cancel, prepare a medical report with the issue date, confirmation of a condition preventing travel, or proof of sick leave or hospitalization.

Importantly, the illness must occur after the insurance is purchased. If the insurer finds the health issue existed beforehand, they may deny the claim. The insurer evaluates the seriousness of the unforeseen event, not a personal decision not to travel.

Fear of travel, war concerns, or uncertain security typically aren't valid cancellation reasons. Exceptions may include official travel advisories or airspace closures.

Generally, conflicts alone don't justify cancellation recognition. It depends on specific insurance terms. In Slovakia, no law mandates insurers to cover cancellations due to conflict unless officially advised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

When signing a contract, scrutinize the terms you're agreeing to and what the insurer defines as an insured event. Extended packages with no-reason cancellation insurance exist but are pricier and cover only a portion of the trip cost. They must be purchased when booking the vacation.

Insurance's Role in Cancelled or Delayed Flights

A cancelled or delayed flight isn't automatically an insured event. It's crucial to know who is responsible—the airline, travel agency, or insurance company. For flights from the EU, European regulations apply, regardless of your destination. This includes flights like Vienna to Dubai.

The airline must:

  • offer a replacement flight or refund,
  • provide refreshments during long waits,
  • or accommodation if the flight is postponed to the next day.

In extraordinary situations like war or airspace closure, financial compensation for a cancelled flight is usually not available. The carrier must offer a return or refund but isn't required to compensate in such extraordinary circumstances.

What Can the Insurance Company Do?

While travel insurance typically doesn't cover flight cancellations or ensure a return home without health issues, there is hope. Extended packages might cover additional costs such as:

  • accommodation during long delays,
  • meals while waiting,
  • delayed baggage,
  • and alternative transport to some extent.

Special travel insurance for cancelled flights doesn't replace airline obligations but can help with costs beyond those obligations—if included in the policy.

Flying Through a Travel Agency?

If you bought a package tour, your contract is with the travel agency, not the airline. The tour organizer must communicate with the carrier and assist with returns. If extraordinary events occur before departure, clients can usually withdraw from the contract without fees. Travel insurance still covers health risks, but return logistics are the tour organizer's responsibility.

Travel insurance for a cancelled flight: what are your rights?

Travel Insurance and War Conflict

Most policies list war or armed conflict as exclusions. This means the conflict itself isn't an insured event. Some insurers offer terrorism coverage for specific incidents, not widespread military escalation. If injuries occur, medical expenses, hospitalization, and repatriation are usually covered by basic insurance—subject to specific conditions.

Insurance Companies Extend Coverage for Stranded Clients

Due to escalating conflict in the Middle East, causing airspace closures and flight cancellations, many insurers are extending travel insurance for stranded clients. This includes companies like Allianz, Generali, Union, Kooperativa, and UNIQA, among others.

Stranded at Your Destination?

If the situation worsens during your stay:

  • follow official recommendations from the Slovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
  • contact the airline or travel agency immediately,
  • and keep all flight cancellation confirmations and cost receipts.

Travel offers freedom, but it also highlights the world's unpredictability. Understanding your insurance coverage is crucial. It's not a catch-all solution but primarily protects your health and unexpected medical expenses. The best assurance isn't just insurance—it's being informed. Know whom to contact, what documents to save, and where to find current advice. Peace of mind in travel starts long before you reach the airport, beginning with informed decisions.
